A Firefly Novel
The Travelin’ Librarian: CC-licensed Firefly FanFic by serious SciFi Author
Established and popular science fiction author Steven Brust has written My Own Kind of Freedom: A Firefly Novel and released it under CreativeCommons on his Web site. (.doc & .pdf) I’ve also uploaded the PDF version to my Scribd account. I’ve not started reading it yet but I’ve got it loaded on my Sony Reader so I’ll be getting to it soon.

Shelfari spam: “basically social networking rapists”
Thingology (LibraryThing’s ideas blog): Shelfari spam: “basically social networking rapists”
We respect our competitors with one exception: the site “Shelfari.com.” We have always spoken our mind, so here’s a piece of it: Shelfari has gained traction by engaging in unethical practices, including astroturfing (posting on blogs pretending to be users, not employees*) and putting out press releases about how they invented the idea. But the worst has been their spamming campaign. These are strong accusations, but provable. This post lays out fifty-one posts that show they are, in the words of the well-known blog Gawker, “basically social networking rapists.”
Fortunately, one of the things they got right was putting an option to delete your account in the prefs. I just did.

Incubus Dreams
Too much sex, not enough plot. Good character development thoough, and Richard’s finally pulling his head out of his ass.

Rant Time
Why does the tough chick in the dark fantasy novels have to fall into the arms of the guy she doesn’t like? And on his terms. It’s got to be for the fan boys because as a woman I just want to kick her ass. Too many books recently have followed the same pattern.
I really miss the old Anita. If she ever gets her head on straight she’ll once again be a breath of fresh air.

Trying Something New
There’s this new Structured Blogging plugin. It sets up a form for certain types of posts. It automatically looks up the title in Amazon and creates the link for you.
Also, funny book.

Anita, Laurell, Rah Rah Rah
The Book Stops Here: Anita, Laurell, Rah Rah Rah is a more objective look at the changes to Anita than most fans seem to have been able to manage. I hope she’s right that the other shoe is coming. I read the first few chapters of the next book in a collection and went “WTF?!”.
Oh, and LKH blogs! I had no clue. It’s apparently her husband’s site but they both post.
There’s an feed but unfortunately, it brings up errors in my reader :-(.
And the biggest surprise is that the page is done in XHTML and CSS (I was looking for the feed link). Unfortunately, the page itself is hard to read because of the black background and the blue links are practically invisible. On the other hand, if Jonathon wants help… (hint, hint ;-))

Book Update
- Undead and Unwed
- Is just as good as the summary sounds. Take all of the arrogant, snobby vampires from most fantasy novels and throw in a “normal” girl too important to kill and too annoying to ignore. <weg>
- Dead Witch Walking
- Another one sitting book. It’s the closest thing to Anita I’ve read with a female character. The only thing missing is the humor but it’s still very enjoyable.
- Blood Rites (The Dresden Files Series Book 6)
- The closest thing to Anita I’ve read with a male character. It’s actually closer than Dead Witch Walking because it also has the humor. Normally I don’t have favorites within a series, I just consider all of the books as one work. But this one is easily the best so far.

Book Reviews
It’s like I have a reading disorder. I haven’t read that much in months but in the last 4 days I’ve gone through three books and started a fourth. I’ve also got an order in with Amazon.
Killer Hair is about a fashion columnist in Washington D.C. The setting is interesting and the main character is very cool. Definately slightly above the usual brain candy.
I read Blade Dancer in one sitting. Great sci-fi setting and the main character kicks major ass. It’s just as cool as the cover.

New Book Series?
The books: Undead and Unwed and Undead and Unemployed by Mary Janice Davidson. And seriously, if you enjoy a) chick lit or b) vampires or c) all of the above, please go and buy them. You’ll thank me. Rarely have I read a series - chick lit or vampire - that has captivated me so much in so short a time. Well, not since becoming permanently addicted to Laurell K. Hamilton’s books, anyway.
The characters are a hoot, particularly the main character, Betsy, who is a newly dead Queen of Vampires with a shoe fetish. Really. Do I need to say anything more than that? The cast of characters is fresh and appealing, absolutely hilarious, and engaging enough that I wish there were already a dozen more books in the series to plow through.
Emphasis mine. Sounds like fun. I’ve added them to my wish and “to buy lists”.

Dime-Store Magic
Interesting book. It’s actually the third in a series but that wasn’t a problem. I got the impression that the first two focused more on other characters. The plot is pretty conventional but what struck me is the idea of witches and sorcerers and separate races from humans. The concept isn’t very developed. Most of the characters act pretty human and I keep wondering why she doesn’t smack the girl she’s taking care of. I’ll probably read the next book to see how the character-developement progresses but right now it’s not a favorite.

book
I haven’t read The Eyre Affair: A Novel but it looks interesting. It’s a fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, alternate history.
Imagine this. Great Britain in 1985 is close to being a police state. The Crimean War has dragged on for more than 130 years and Wales is self-governing. The only recognizable thing about this England is her citizens’ enduring love of literature. And the Third Most Wanted criminal, Acheron Hades, is stealing characters from England’s cherished literary heritage and holding them for ransom.
Bibliophiles will be enchanted, but not surprised, to learn that stealing a character from a book only changes that one book, but Hades has escalated his thievery. He has begun attacking the original manuscripts, thus changing all copies in print and enraging the reading public. That’s why Special Operations Network has a Literary Division, and it is why one of its operatives, Thursday Next, is on the case.

eBooks
For those I’ve made curious by my ebook raves, I’ve put together a summary of what I found at The Creative Librarian. What I found really interesting was the software that manages ebook lending libraries. It would be so cool and so very convenient if the public library would set that up.
