Malpractice
My grandmother (”Mother”) has been having problems for a couple of years. She’s been losing her memory and her sense of balence. Everyone in the family has been worried about blood clots in her brain. One of my cousins who is a nurse even said it was Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA’s).
My aunt has been trying to get the doctor to order a MRI since April to no effect. And if you think I’m hard-headed, I’m the mild one in my family. Finally, she insisted he just look at my grandmother try to walk accross the room and he gave in.
The result?
Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA’s).
To be precise: Small Vessel Disease-a cerebrovascular disease defined by a constriction or narrowing in small arteries of the brain.
Her brain’s been dying a bit at a time. If the “doctor” had listened earlier, the damage wouldn’t be nearly as bad. Two years ago, she walked two miles a day. Now she has trouble walking two yards. If my aunt hadn’t kept at him, he would have let it go on until her mind was gone or she had a large stroke.
Yes I do have a couple of searches going on for the state medical board.

Yes it is Midnight
Being sick sucks. And I’m really bad at it.
Tuesday night I couldn’t figure out why I was going from so cold I was shivering to burning up. It was when the nausea hit that I realized I was sick. I passed out at some point and managed to get up in time to go to work.
Why?
Because I had to teach two classes back to back starting at 8 and no one else was going to be there in time to do it. I managed to find my boss before the first class to tell her what was going on and she promised to get me desk time and the night class I was supposed to teach as well as getting me rides to and from the ER. I love my boss.
They weren’t my best classes but I don’t think either of the teachers noticed. I was wisked off to the hospital where I was seen fairly quickly. I had checked my symptoms between classes and was concerned that I had an infection but after the usual tests the doctor concluded it was just a virus and sent me home with a prescription for an anti-nausea drug (I was pretty much over the fever and chills by then).
So why am I up at midnight (near one) on Sunday? Because I’m still sick. And it sucks. The chills are gone. Fever is very rare but the nausea is driving me nuts. As long as I don’t eat or drink anything I can ignore it enough to do something else. But as soon as I try to go to bed…
I’ve taken a pill, we’ll see if it helps.

The Mythological God Test
| Anubis Indeed, you are 66% erudite, 62% sensual, 45% martial, and 66% saturnine. |
| Anubis was the Egyptian God of funerary rituals and the protector of the dead as well as the judge of souls and ruler of the underworld. Since it was his duty to weigh souls (along with the Goddess Maat) as a means of discovering the content of honesty, Anubis was also the God of truth.
He is usually seen as a man with the head of a jackal holding the divine sceptre carried by kings and Gods, but he can also be found on the walls of tombs as a black jackal or dog accompanying Isis. By no means an evil God, his domain of graves and tombs was nevertheless a frightening one, but then, one that offered the chance of an afterlife. But why did the Egyptian God of the Dead have the head of a jackal? Well, jackals have the uncomfortable habit of lurking about tombs and graves, which was one of the reasons why the Egyptians sought to make their tombs more elaborate; to keep the bodies safe from the rather smart black canines. It is only natural therefore that a God of mummification would be connected with them. By worshipping Anubis, they hoped to invoke him to protect their deceased and assure their safe journey through the underworld, his domain. The Fifteen Gods These are the 15 categories of this test. If you score above average in … …all or none of the four variables: Dagda. … Erudite: Thoth. … Sensual: Frey. … Martial: Mars. … Saturnine: Mictlantecuhtli. … Erudite & Sensual: Amun. … Erudite & Martial: Odin. … Erudite & Saturnine: Anubis. … Sensual & Martial: Zeus. … Sensual & Saturnine: Cernunnos. … Martial & Saturnine: Loki. … Erudite, Sensual & Martial: Lug. … Erudite, Sensual & Saturnine: Coyote. … Erudite, Martial & Saturnine: Hades. … Sensual, Martial & Saturnine: Pan. |

The Mythological Goddess Test
| Nemesis Indeed, you are 66% erudite, 62% sensual, 50% martial, and 70% saturnine. |
| This daughter of the Greek Goddess Nyx was initially thought of as a harsh force of opposition. However, she was later softened to represent the feeling of just resentment or righteous anger against those who committed crimes with apparent impunity, or who had inordinate good fortune.
Her name, Nemesis, means “she who distributes or deals out”. And that she did. As she was the one directing human affairs in such a way as to maintain equilibrium of happiness and unhappiness, she could bring about losses and suffering if you made the impression of being “too” happy. Being the one who checked extravagant favours by Tyche (or Fortuna, as the Romans called her), she was regarded as an avenging or punishing divinity, so it only makes sense that the Goddess of Punishment, Poena, was an attendant of Nemesis. Despise all this suffering and vengeance, she is also said to have been as beautiful as Aphrodite. Her attributes were, among others, a rein, a sword, or a balance. The Fifteen Goddesses These are the 15 categories of this test. If you score above average in … …all or none of the four variables: Neit. … Erudite: Minerva. … Sensual: Aphrodite. … Martial: Artemis. … Saturnine: Persephone. … Erudite & Sensual: Isis. … Erudite & Martial: Sekhmet. … Erudite & Saturnine: Nemesis. … Sensual & Martial: Hera. … Sensual & Saturnine: Bast. … Martial & Saturnine: Ilamatecuhtli. … Erudite, Sensual & Martial: Maeve. … Erudite, Sensual & Saturnine: Freya. … Erudite, Martial & Saturnine: Sedna. … Sensual, Martial & Saturnine: Macha. |

The Mythological Profile Test
| Selkie You scored 40% Esotericism, 14% Power, and 54% Malevolence! |
| The shy Selkies are marine creatures in the shape of a seal. They can be found near the islands of Orkney and Shetland. A female can shed her skin and come ashore as a beautiful woman. When a man finds the skin, he can force the Selkie to be a good, if somewhat sad, wife. Should she ever recover the skin, she will immediately return to sea, leaving her husband behind. The male Selkies are responsible for storms and also for the sinking of ships, which is their way of avenging the hunting of seals. |

No Rant, Just Wondering
Hollywood after the Anal. Hole again
Hollywood has fielded a shockingly ambitious piece of “Analog Hole” legislation while everyone was out partying in costume. Under a new proposed Analog Hole bill, it will be illegal to make anything capable of digitizing video unless it either has all its outputs approved by the Hollywood studios, or is closed-source, proprietary and tamper-resistant. The idea is to make it impossible to create an MPEG from a video signal unless Hollywood approves it.
This is like the Broadcast Flag on steroids. The Broadcast Flag only covered TV receivers. This covers everything with an analog video input. If this had been around in 1976, the VCR would have been illegal. Today, it would ban Mythtv, every tuner-card in the market, and boxes like ElGato’s eyeTV the Slingbox and the Orb and the vPod. This is a proposal to turn huge classes of technology into something that exists only at the sufferance of the studios.
Do these people really think that if they made breathing illegal people would stop doing it?

Codices Electronici Sangallenses
CESG - Codices Electronici Sangallenses - Virtual Library
The purpose of the “Codices Electronici Sangallenses” (Digital Abbey Library of St. Gallen) is to provide access to the medieval codices in the Abbey Library of St. Gallen by creating a virtual library. The project will begin with a two-year pilot to digitally reproduce a selection of the finest illuminated codices at such a high resolution that researchers cannot only work with the manuscripts but also perform detailed (art historical or otherwise) analyses of the miniatures in the codices.

Reboot!
I started hearing about this year’s CSS Reboot (when a bunch of websites unveil new designs on the same day) and realized I was bored with the last look of this site. I had a nice Fall themed design almost done but I just couldn’t face actually using it here. I started the purple and grey color scheme just because those were colors I liked but now it seems I can’t let go of them. I decided to switch the redesign to gold and greay with touches of purple and it was full-steam ahead.
So enjoy and watch out for sudden tweaks.
