new/old layout
Working on a layout I started a while ago. It looks exactly as it’s supposed to in IE5.5 and 6 on PC. It breaks in Moz 1.0 and IE5.2 on Mac. I can’t figure out why.
:violent
I think I’m going to to spend some time with Diablo tonight.

css templates
My CSS Templates are slowly drawing more and more people to my site. Now, they’ve been linked to as an example for a class with Glish, The Noodle Incident, and The Edge.
Pardon the eardrum splitting screech.
“Eeeekkk!!!!”
Anything I can think of to say makes me sound even more like a drooling fan-girl. So to understate it, it’s really cool to be on a list with the masters. :biggrin

Search Function
I’ve installed MT-Search on both my blogs. It’s not really needed yet but it’s there for when it is.
I also changed the archive pages on both sites to hopefully make them easier to use.
To read how this all went, go to “Adventures in website management”.
I’m going to look for some aspirin.

Adventures in website management
I finally got around to installing MT-Search. I don’t have enough posts on either of my blogs to need it yet but I think a search function is a good thing to have. And maybe one day someone will need it (probably me :wink).
Meanwhile, I’ve made changes to the archive pages of both my sites. It is basically the same changes for both but I think it will make them easier to navigate through. Again, on the assumption that it’ll be needed eventually.
The above makes it sound so easy…

A List Apart: 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web
Lots of fun stuff today.
A List Apart: 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web outlines some guidelines for news/blog writing. They are interesting and practical, with the ring of truth that hitting the nail on the head causes.
"A List Apart" is one of my favorite online magazines. It specializes in articles of interest to web designers.
Controlled Vocabulary on the Web
Digital Web Magazine - Tutorial: Mind your phraseology!
Web designers get excited by controlled vocabularies. *smirk* Professional librarians specialize in this and there are lots of books on the subject.
Still, it’s a decent introduction for people without the Masters.

Go Dell
For once, someone forwarded something interesting in the email.
It seems Dell is planning on starting a line of computers that they’ll sell without operating systems. They say they’ve had a lot of requests for it.
Why is this important?
It’s the first commercial crack in Microsoft’s stranglehold on the PC world. If a group could create an OS that would run on the Intel chipset with a good GUI (which let’s Linux out, sorry we’re not all that smart) and would run Windows programs at a lower price than Windows, they could give Microsoft real competition. And get sued out of business.
Then there’s Mac OS X (check out “Three”).

Weekend Update
Friday night: Went with Lethann, Kestrel, Bill, and Bear to see “XXX”. Great movie. Stayed up way too late.
Saturday: Slept too late. boxed up books for Tatiana to take to the library as donations. It was painful but I managed. Stayed up too late again when Bill dropped by with “The Mark of Zorro.”
Sunday: Slept too late. Lethann officially moved to Atlanta. Both of us managed not to cry, barely. Went window-shopping with Bill. Went nuts over a bed setup in the Bombay Company. Returned to sanity when I saw the prices. Thinking I may make my own quilt. Stayed up too late.
Monday:Got up on time. Will hate myself in the afternoon.

NIH Job
I was surfing the National Institutes of Health site to see what kind positions they had to offer when I found my perfect job. I went into overdrive and got my resume submitted on time, even though I’m still a year from being qualified.
I just heard back that the job was canceled. It’s better than being turned down, I guess, but it makes me worry about being able to get jobs in the future.

New layouts
I’ve got a couple of new layouts up at my site.

Blog and Business layouts
I’ve made a layout template of my new blog. Strangely enough, it works very well in NN 4.7. The main box isn’t centered and the rollovers don’t work but those are about the only difference.
Really strangely, it sucked in IE 5 for the Mac. It’s hacked so that those rules are hidden from that browser now. IE Mac people just don’t see the pretty background graphic. :tongue
I also did another, more professional looking layout that’s a generic version of a very popular layout for sites with articles.

Jabber
My webhost has installed Jabber and is offering it on all of their current plans.
What is Jabber?
It’s an open-source standard for instant messaging. Picture being able to use one messenger service and talk to anyone one else, no matter what their messenger service is. Actually there are already modules that let you go between the various services from Jabber.
Anyway, having it installed on my server means that I can create my own network (that’s not the right word but oh well) and hand out usernames to my friends on my domain.
Why would they want to?
They won’t but if they did it would be safer for their privacy and they could have better nicknames.

yep, it’s Monday
I walk over to Lois’ office to backup one of the databases and there’s a shiny new lock on her door, complete with a combination lock. I have no idea where it came from or why. I called Nina (library secretary) and got the combination.
Went back to backup the database and the information hasn’t changed since last Wedsday. Possible but unlikely, that department has screwed it up again already. Lois will not be happy. Ug.
Got back out to the reference desk and immediately had a problem I couldn’t fix. I can’t wait for Lois to get back.
Went upstairs to do some software updates. I got the first computer set up and ran down to do the other. There’s a sales rep on it. Very strange for this early in the morning. So I went back up and waited for the first one to finish. It took a while. Went back to the second and the rep was still there. We have 2 dozen public computers set up for reading email, surfing the Internet, searching databases, etc. And he simply has to hog one of the ones set for quick lookups.
